For me, design is where usefulness and beauty stop being separate goals. Three habits get me there, in this order.

  1. 01

    Start from evidence

Who the people are, what gets in their way, and what the data says about it. I don’t design until I can state the problem in one sentence.

  2. 02

    Structure before style

Content, flows and hierarchy come first. A product that makes sense is already halfway to being a product people enjoy.

  3. 03

    Craft the details, then dare

Spacing, states, motion and microcopy decide whether people trust a product. Then I push a little further, and test whether it holds up.

Research & strategy

  • Domain analysisThe market, rules and constraints of a field, before designing for it.
  • User researchInterviews, surveys and field observation in people’s real context.
  • SynthesisThematic coding, insights and archetypes that a team can defend.
  • Product specificationsRequirements, user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Usability testingTasks, observation and the changes they lead to.

Structure & interaction

  • Information architectureContent and features organised so people find them without thinking.
  • User flows & journeysEvery step, state and edge case, across devices.
  • Interaction designFeedback and transitions that make each action obvious and reversible.
  • Prototyping & motionHigh-fidelity prototypes that test ideas before they get expensive.
  • AccessibilityContrast, sizes, focus and content that work for more people.

Interface & delivery

  • UI & visual designTypography, layout and colour that make an interface feel considered.
  • Design systemsComponents, variables and tokens that keep a product consistent.
  • Working with developersRealistic specs and clear handoffs, from someone who builds too.
  • DocumentationDecisions written down, so the next person knows why.

  • FigmaInterfaces, prototypes, variables and design systems.
  • Claude & CodexCoding agents to build and test what I design.
  • Local AI toolsModels on my own machine, like Ollama, for private experiments.
  • Affinity & IllustratorVector graphics, brand material and print.
  • UnityInteractive, spatial and XR prototypes.
  • Meta Developer HubBuilding and testing on Meta Quest headsets.
  • GitVersioning code and prototypes.
